YP Letters: We need real leadership and a more consensual politics

THE first thing we urgently need following the outcome of the referendum is positive leadership, and it remains to be seen where that can come from.

The referendum has shown the electorate is not neatly divided into Labour and Conservative. From that comes the hope we might now look forward to more mature consensual politics and less party line dogma. The EU lost the support of the UK because it has been too focused on controlling the domestic issues of member states instead of those to strengthen our collective influence in the wider world.

A federal-style EU state with government from the top was a fantasy from the start. On a final note, The Yorkshire Post is to be complimented on a balanced and impartial presentation during the referendum campaign.

TAKE out London, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the majority of voters in the UK voted something in the order of 56 to 44 per cent to leave the EU.

One of the reasons that the majority wanted to leave, and London, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain, was because these areas were receiving far greater financial benefits from the EU.

WHEN will the chattering classes realise that the slender majority for ‘Leave’ was not influenced by or the fault of British politicians, but by the EU itself? The EU is totally responsible for the outcome of the referendum.

COME on Boris Johnson, Michael Gove and Iain Duncan Smith, why is it that the bad losers are getting away with making all the noise? Never mind the statesmanlike hypocrisy of praising David Cameron. You won! So let’s hear the will of the people for immediate action loudly proclaimed.

I THINK it is only fair to point out that nothing will happen in a hurry. Bit like those terms and conditions you never read online. There are hundreds of politicians and civil servants trying to find the small print in the EU treaties that relate to leaving as no one has needed them before. I feel a lot of voters will be disappointed.

But I am sure there will be no return to pounds, shillings and pence, nor feet and inches, nor pints and gallons. As for old fashioned light bulbs...
