LIKE past and present Lib Dem leaders Nick Clegg and Tim Farron, Paddy Ashdown (The Yorkshire Post, January 25) just doesn’t get it.

Their party was but wiped out at the last election because of their stupid adherence to the EU as the greatest thing since sliced bread. The Liberal Democrats, probably the world’s most incorrectly named party, are finished and they are not coming back. If proof was needed, Lord Ashdown’s speech proves it.

Like most remainers, he is now talking about populism causing the June 23 referendum result, but surely populism is responsible for the result in all elections? They also mention nationalism, but there is nothing wrong with being proud of one’s country – it is called patriotism and is present in every country in the world, but is looked on with contempt in Britain by the likes of Lord Ashdown and the so- called political elite.

There is nothing wrong or extreme or dangerous in wanting to live in a free self-governing country, but Lord Ashdown and his ilk would sooner us be governed by the EU under orders from Berlin.

He says that his “moderates” don’t have a voice, but since the referendum they have gone into overdrive with the already totally discredited Project Fear, and their insults hurled at the 17.42m people who do not agree with them know no bounds.

The fact of the matter is that for many years now a large section of the public have seen the damage being done to this country by the EU and have long wanted out, but until now they have been denied the chance to leave by a political cabal of which Lord Ashdown is a fully paid up member.

It does not really matter how much political nonentities like Ashdown, Clegg and Farron try to cover it up, they are in fact trying to overturn a democratic vote and deny the will of the people of this country to be a free, self-governing, sovereign nation governed by Parliament.

Lord Ashdown mentions the free market, but the so called single market is not free it is a protection racket for German and French industries and it ties us to a failing little EU and prevents us from trading with the much bigger and far more lucrative world outside the EU. This article, along with the one by the Bishop of Leeds (The Yorkshire Post, January 23) in a very similar tone, clearly shows why it is now time for the House of Lords to be completely reformed.

The current model needs to be completely scrapped and a wholly elected chamber of only 300 put in its place.
