YP Letters: Young will one day thank us for voting to leave the EU

IN response to Grant Woodward’s article on Brexit and the generation gap (The Yorkshire Post, June 29), I will say that I am a retired, educated schoolteacher with six grandchildren under 21. I am a churchgoer, totally anti-racist and over the years have worked and done fund raising for many overseas charities.

It would have been very easy for me to settle for the status quo at my time of life and vote Remain. However, after much heart searching, I put my grandchildren first and voted Leave.

We belong to the generation that was lied to 50 years ago and persuaded to vote to join a free trade area – fine, except that there was an ulterior, unspoken motive, a federal Europe and the relinquishing of democratic rights. This federalisation by stealth and rule by bureaucrats has increased until it should now be apparent to all.

The recent abysmal failure to address the refugee tragedy until too late, and abandon struggling Greece to cope alone, demonstrates the lack of any moral compass or humanitarian aspect to this organisation

I am greatly concerned for the future of my grandchildren. Housing costs, education costs, lack of opportunity, problems which have all arisen whilst we are members of the European Union. The high rates of unemployment of under 25s in many EU countries (many over 25 per cent) are very worrying. They may not realise it yet, but the younger generation will eventually thank their grandparents’ generation for grasping a second chance. We have learnt from experience .

Now it is up to our children and grandchildren to grasp and build on the legacy they have been given. And, of course, to our politicians to deliver.

GRANT Woodward is entitled to his opinion but is wrong to attack the so called ‘baby boomers’. He was on the losing side and should shut up and get on with it.

REGARDING all the marches and protests against Brexit. So much for democracy.

THERE is a joke: A lost tourist asks for directions: “Oh I wouldn’t set off from here...”

Well we are here, and must find a way to fulfil the people’s wishes and to do what’s the best for the country too.
