The Tories would get a six-point bounce if they traded David Cameron for Boris Johnson as leader, according to a poll by YouGov for The Sun newspaper.

It put the party’s support on 31 per cent – well behind Labour on 42 per cent Some 37 per cent said they would back the Conservatives under London mayor Mr Johnson, whose popularity has surged after the Olympics; Labour dropped to 38 per cent.

The results of the survey could fuel fevered speculation over Mr Cameron’s position.
