Pool turns green to reduce carbon

ENVIRONMENTALLY-friendly technology is being introduced in a £300,000 scheme at a public swimming pool in Ryedale to slash carbon emissions.

Ryedale Pool in Pickering is the latest facility in the district to undergo a green facelift with new energy efficient measures, which are aimed at cutting 100 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

The technology includes including a gas-fired combined heat and power unit, air source heat pumps and an array of solar thermal panels which will provide renewable, low carbon energy to heat the pool and provide hot water for showers. The air–handling system is also being adapted to reduce energy use and provide improved environmental conditions inside the pool hall.

The 12-week programme of work started on Monday, and pool users have been warned that the site will have to be closed for a fortnight from March 5 to March 19. Ryedale District Council’s facilities and emergency planning manager, Mike Adams, apologised for any inconvenience caused, but stressed the work will hopefully be completed by April 6.
