Popular city cafe set for facelift

ONE of Sheffield's most popular and iconic cafes is set to undergo a revamp.

Forge Dam Cafe in the Porter Valley, which is about 80 years old, is set to close its doors while the major refurbishment takes place. The cafe is set to reopen in time for Christmas.

Coun Shaffaq Mohammed, Sheffield Council's cabinet member for communities, said: "The cafe building at Forge Dam has been in place for some time and the roof, external walls and some of the floor are in need of complete renewal.

"People love the appearance of the building and wanted its quirkiness be maintained wherever possible. The idea of a new building was discounted at the design stage.

"We've been working with the cafe tenants and are doing the work now so that it will take place when the cafe is at its quietest. That way the new improved cafe will be back open to people to enjoy from Christmas."

After Forge Dam Cafe closes temporarily on Monday, November 8, drinks and snacks will be provided from a snack cabin at the same site. Work is set to include strengthening and insulating the building.
