Ports firm launches training scheme

YOUNG people in the Humber region are being given the chance to work on the UK’s busiest estuary and port complex under a new training scheme being launched by Associated British Ports.

The company has announced details of a new marine apprenticeship that offers a chance to be part of the operational teams that control all shipping movements on the Humber.

The four-year programme will give hands-on training as a marine operations apprentice and include introductions to hydrography, conservancy, dredging and pilotage.

No age limit has been set but the course is aimed at school leavers, and applicants should have at least five GCSEs, including English and maths, at grade C or above.

Competition is expected to be high, with only four places available on the first intake.

ABP Dock Master Humber Captain Martin Gough said: “Despite the economic uncertainty ABP’s Humber ports are thriving.

“The continued development of the Green Port scheme at Hull as well as the recently announced Grimsby Riverside Terminal highlights, among others, the extensive growth opportunities on the Humber and within the ports industry, which will mean exciting career prospects for these apprentices.”

The scheme is being trialled in the Humber ports of Hull, Immingham, Grimsby and Goole.

ABP said the project would complement its highly successful graduate trainee programme, which has been in place for almost 40 years.

The company declined to say how much the apprentices would be paid but said they would get “incremental increases” throughout the scheme.

Anyone interested in applying can attend presentation events being held in Hull on Tuesday, May 15 and at Immingham on Thursday, May 17.
