Robin Garbutt spoke only to confirm his name during the 15-minute hearing at Teesside Crown Court.

He did not enter a plea.

The 44-year-old was remanded into custody by The Recorder of Middlesbrough, Judge Peter Fox.

He will next appear at Teesside Crown Court in June.

The murder investigation began after police responded to reports of a robbery at the post office in East Road and discovered Mrs Garbutt's body.
