Potters gather in York to celebrate British ceramics

Work by 50 leading British ceramic artists, from large sculptural forms to refined porcelain jugs and quirky hand-painted vases, have been hand-picked to showcase the potential hidden within a slab of clay.

The exhibition, Ceramic Art York, is accompanied by a programme of talks, discussions, demonstrations and films offering visitors an insight into the art form, and collectors an opportunity to buy directly from the maker.

Ceramic artist and chairman of Ceramic Art North, Ruth King said: “Ceramic Art York offers visitors an invaluable opportunity to network with makers and see a wide variety of studio ceramics under one roof.

“As the makers are present this is a very personalised experience with unique opportunities to discuss the artworks.”

Exhibiting artists include London-based Tamsin Arrowsmith-Brown, whose porcelain bowls and homeware are decorated with motifs inspired by embroidery, and James Hake’s wheel-thrown stoneware which is decorated with oriental glazes, much of which is made using local materials gathered from the quarries and clay seams around his studio in Lancashire.

Other artists include ceramist and sculptor Karin Hessenberg from Sheffield.

The exhibition runs from today until Sunday.
