Powerful motive as priest steps out

A PRIEST will be showing the power of prayer as he walks and prays around nine parishes in North Yorkshire to raise money to install electricity in a church.

The Rev Roy Shaw, priest in the Rufforth, Healaugh and Tockwith group of churches, says electricity was installed at All Saints Church, Moor Monkton, last year, leaving only one church in the group – St John the Baptist, Hessay – without a supply.

"Presently, lighting is via candles and gas lamps, heating is via gas heaters, and the organ requires an energetic pumper to get it going," he added. "I love walking, and find it easier to pray when I walk."

He will walk from Tockwith church, calling at Moor Monkton church, Hessay, Rufforth, Askham Richard and Bilbrough churches, on Easter Monday.

His journey will continue the next day from Tockwith church to Long Marston, Bilton, Wighill and Healaugh churches. Walking around all the churches will add up to 24 miles.

He added: "I hope others will join me for all or part of the walk. At each church we will say the prayer for the day, and the Easter acclamations, and walk to the next parish. The walk will end each day with Evensong."
