Practical Tranquillity calmly gathers gold

Top show garden honour went to the North Yorkshire partnership of Mark Hanlon, of New Leaf Landscapes, and dry-stone wall craftsman Keith Ledger, both based near Thirsk.

Their entry, Practical Tranquillity, which won a Premier Gold award, combines classical ingredients with contemporary design but also uses plants such as sage as a productive element.

A key feature is the curved dry-stone wall bench seat created by Keith while the blue, white, purple and silver planting supplied by Baldersby Garden Centre, alongside the sound of trickling water from a copper cup feature, creates the sense of calm and relaxation that designer Mark wanted.

One of four gold award winners in the show garden was The Writer’s Pad created by Lee Bestall, of Sheffield-based Inspired Garden Design.

Also winning gold were PWP Landscape, of Leeds, Sally Tierney, of Yorkshire Garden Designer, York, and the students from Askham Bryan College.

Wood Landscapes, based between Leeds and Bradford, was awarded a Silver Gilt while the Sticky Back Plastic and Stamps Blue Peter garden created by Horticap, the Harrogate-based centre for adult learning, won a silver award.l
