Pram race pushes total to £25,000

THE revival of a historic pram race has helped to raise thousands of pounds for community projects in Hull's Hessle Road.

The pram race and Hessle Road Carnival, held on September 5, last year, raised almost 25,000, organisers have announced.

A total of 10,000 will be used to match-fund a contribution from the Wooden Spoon charity to develop a community sports project. The remaining 15,000 is available as small grants for local organisations.

Eligible projects must be based in or around Hessle Road and be sustainable and able to provide activities or training.

The deadline for applications is February 26 and anyone want to apply should email [email protected].

The pram race dates from the 1920s and was originally called the Fish Dock Pram Race, when the wives of trawlermen rushed to the trawler owners' offices to collect their husbands' wages. It was last run for fun 20 years ago.

Last year's event attracted dozens of entries.

The Hessle Road Pram Race Trust said it wanted to thank the event's sponsors, especially local business entrepreneurs who had made donations.
