Premier on carbon mission to India

Opportunities for Yorkshire's burgeoning carbon captures and storage industries will be discussed when the Prime Minister leads a business visit to India next month.

Companies looking to form partnerships with Indian businesses in the new industry should contact the Department for Business Innovation and Skills ahead of the July visit.

The Prime Minister said that if Yorkshire and the UK "gets this right" when it comes to CCS, the UK could be used to store carbon not just for the UK but for the Northern Europe as well.

"We have a massive national advantage in terms of carbon capture," he said. "We have got reserves of coal, coal-fired powers stations, carbon capture pilots and the whole of North Sea – an enormous asset in terms of using the depleted oil and gas fields for storing carbon."

Mr Cameron was responding to question from Joanne Pollard of the CO2 Sense organisation about how the region could best find investment.

He said: "I am going to be leading a big business visit to India in July and I think there is a great opportunity to take some of this technology and share it with emerging markets who also want to invest in it and want to form great partnerships to not only tackle climate change but also to provide great high end and high net worth jobs for the future."
