Prescott hails brass for pit village

Former Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott meets musicians from Grimethorpe Colliery Band yesterday at an event to celebrate the village's multi-million pound regeneration.

Mr Prescott oversaw the National Coalfields Programme, which led to public and private investment of 146m to provide new homes and jobs in the community.

The 71-year-old was invited yesterday by the Homes and Communities Agency.

Mr Prescott said he felt “great personal pride” at the changes in Grimethorpe and recalled how the film Brassed Off prompted him to take action in 1997. He said: “I remember feeling angry about what was being shown. Then I realised that I was now the Minister responsible and realised we had to get stuck in.” Picture: Jonathan Gawthorpe
