Pressure to reject extra car boot sale plan

Senior councillors in Bradford are being urged to throw out plans to hold extra car boot sales on a green belt site.

Tony Anderson wants permission to hold 28 car boot sales a year on Sundays at land at Haworth Road, Cullingworth, Bingley, but council officers are recommending that the plans are thrown out.

The proposal will increase the number of days on which car boot sales can be held on the site from 14 days to 28 days.

A previous application was refused because members thought it would lead to an “unacceptable intensification of an inappropriate use within the green belt.”

In a report to members of Bradford Council’s Keighley and Shipley area planning panel officers say the applicant has now submitted clearer plans but are still recommending they are thrown out.

Objectors include Cullingworth Parish Council who are concerned it will generate a “totally unacceptable” level of noise for nearby residents caused by increased traffic.

A number of objections have also been received raising a number of concerns including the fact it is a green belt site and fears there is no suitable access.

The authority has also received a number of letters in favour of the proposal. They say the car boot sales bring trade into the village, they are well run and marshalled and they generate cash for local charities.

Mr Anderson says in his application that sales have been held throughout 2011 with no problems and says a substantial amount of the cash raised benefits a local charity.

Members of the planning panel will meet on Wednesday to decided whether to give the plans the green light or back officer recommendations and reject the proposals.

“The proposals are considered unacceptable for reasons of highways safety and impact on the green belt that would arise from the more intensive use of the site that is being proposed,” the report concludes.
