Price of frame as exhibition hopefuls swamp organisers

Organisers are struggling to cope with the bumper number of entries for the Ryedale Open Art Exhibition.

The judging panel say they will have a very difficult task selecting works which will be shown at the Milton Rooms in Malton from tomorrow.

Ryedale District Council creative economy officer Yvette Turnbull, who organises the show, said: “We knew our show would be very popular with young artists this year, as we are offering a special trophy to the best young artist, which has been kindly donated by James Lishman, a local painter who has been exhibiting at the Ryedale Open for many years.

“What we really weren’t expecting were how many extra adult artists we would also receive entries from this year. We’re absolutely delighted that so many local people are producing such high-quality work.”

The artworks, which have been created by over 150 local people, include paintings, sculpture, photography and textiles.

Ms Turnbull added: “The bit that worries me is how we’re going to fit in so much great work.

“Because the thing is that whilst the number of entries goes up the Milton Rooms don’t get any bigger. I think the judges are going to have a very, very difficult task ahead of them.”

The show will continue until August 23.
