Malcolm’s Gents’ Hairdressers marked 40 years of trade by charging just 35p yesterday, for any haircut, as a way of saying thankyou to loyal customers.

Some of his clients include three generations of the same family.

They opened in 1973 at Pendas Way, in Crossgates, Leeds.

Malcolm Abdy said: “I was 23 when I opened the shop and here I still am, 40 years later. We didn’t have too much of a rush on yesterday, it was a nice easy chill out day, but the 35p charge was much cheaper than the usual £7 that people pay, so it was a pleasant surprise and a thank-you, for many of my loyal customers.

“I was a bit worried there might be long queues if it was mentioned in advance in the Press.

“It was for any cut, a short, back and sides, a crew cut, flat top, or even a trim.”

The father-of-two, who has two grandchildren, said they had a lot of Leeds United fans who came into the shop and that it was the idea of a customer to charge the 1973 price.

Malcolm said: “I have no plans to hang the scissors up just yet, but maybe in a couple of years’ time.”

At the time he opened a loaf of bread cost just 11p and a pint of beer was only 13p.
