Price hike at former Leeds City Council owned car park

Charges to park at Quarry Hill car park next to West Yorkshire Playhouse are to rise from £1.80 to £2 for up to an hour’s parking and from £3.70 to £4 for up to two hours.

It will cost £8.50 to park for over eight hours as opposed to the current £8.20 fee. There will be no change to the £2 charge for parking from 6pm to 10pm.

Leeds City Council owned the car park from the 1970s until March 2014, when it was leased to Caddick as part of a development agreement. Caddick set up a company called Quarry Hill Developments as the owner of the car park.

The development agreement requires Caddick to get permission from Leeds City Council when it wants to increase charges.

A spokeswoman for Leeds City Council said: “This car park is not owned by the council, but we do manage it on behalf of the owners. Following a programme of refurbishment works at Quarry Hill car park and considerable investment in the site, it has been agreed to introduce a new, more simple, charging structure. The new charges reflect the improvements made and the change in the usage of the car park over the past year. The evening charge of £2 will remain the same so there will be minimum impact on evening customers of the West Yorkshire Playhouse. The new charges are still lower than other car parks in the area.”
