Prince works out city gardening

The Prince of Wales took a busload of business leaders back to school yesterday – and learnt a thing or two about growing inner city vegetables in the process.

Charles exchanged tips on leeks and Brussels sprouts with youngsters working on a patch at Surrey Square Junior School, in an area of Southwark, south east London referred to as "hell's waiting room".

The visit formed part of the Prince's Seeing is Believing programme.

"Quite a lot of the children thought it was Prince Charming who was coming," explained head teacher Liz Robinson, adding: "We had to break it to them gently."

If some were disappointed, their faces didn't show it.

Excited parents and students greeted the Prince as he arrived at the centre before he was ushered to the school's vegetable patch.

As nearby builders looked on non-too-fussed about the royal visit, the Prince was guided around the garden by nine-year-old Tolu Akimola-Adesila and her green-fingered schoolmate Dylan Clancy, 10.
