Princess enjoys day at races

Racegoers in Doncaster were joined by royalty yesterday after Princess Anne hosted an event to raise money for two charities.

The Princess, who is patron of the Spinal Injuries Association, hosted a fundraising luncheon at the course's Mallard Restaurant for 300 guests before watching a race named in her honour. Money raised on the day will be shared by the association and Doncaster Royal infirmary's Heartbeat appeal, to buy equipment for a cardiovascular unit.

Princess Anne was last in Doncaster to officially re-open the racecourse in 2007.

The course's managing director, Mark Spincer, said the Royal visitor presented the trophy to the Duke of Roxburghe, who owns Devastation, the winner of the HRH Princess Royal EBF Maiden Fillies Stakes at 2.15pm.

He added: "We were delighted to welcome the Princess Royal back to racecourse."
