Princess Royal has busy day in region as she visits brewery and university

THE award-winning Saltaire Brewery has been given the royal seal of approval by Princess Anne who has had a celebration ale being made in her honour.

The Princess Royal visited the brewery yesterday to officially open its new fermentation facilities, which will increase production by 30 per cent this year.

Princess Anne was given a tour of the brewery and met the team behind the business and also received a gift pack of ales to take away.

Managing director Tony Gartland, said: “To mark this very special occasion, we’ve brewed a new Celebration Ale to toast the Princess Royal at special Beer Club on the day.

“It is a fantastic way for the brewery to start 2014.”

The Princess also gained an insight into Saltaire’s popular Beer Club – a rolling 12-month beer festival, attended by hundreds of visitors every month, that has become a fixture in Yorkshire’s vibrant beer scene.

A specially convened Beer Club welcomed the Princess Royal and toasted her with the new premium brew, Celebration Ale 6.5 per cent, which has been created and launched in honour of the visit.

The Princess also visited Leeds Metropolitan University as part of her one-day visit to Yorkshire.

Amid tight security, the Princess, who is patron of the College of Occupational Therapists, attended a conference organised by MSc occupational therapy and physiotherapy students at the university’s city campus.

The special guest was given a tour of the university’s new clinical skills suite at the Portland Building and met students before delivering a speech at the conference in the university’s Rose Bowl.

In her speech, Princess Anne praised students for their dedication and hard work, saying: “I hope all of you are here because you feel that this is a caring role, a role very particular to occupational therapists and physiotherapists.”
