Prize-winning pictures in frame for new exhibition

PHOTOGRAPHS taken by entrants in a long-running international competition have gone on display in South Yorkshire as part of a travelling exhibition.

The 120 pictures have been selected from thousands submitted to the Royal Photographic Society for its International Print Exhibition by both amateur and professional photographers.

Staff at The Civic, in Barnsley, which is hosting the exhibition, said the pictures had proved “very popular” with visitors since the show opened last week.

Gallery manager David Sinclair said: “The photographs take in a wide range of subject matter, and some of them have been enhanced using computers and some are completely untouched.

“It’s a really welcoming exhibition and I think people are finding the images accessible and appreciate their value.”

The Royal Photographic Society has been running the contest for 154 years, and said it aims to “showcase a wide variety of established, emerging and amateur photography as the longest standing exhibition of its kind in the world”.

This year 700 photographers from around the world submitted nearly 3,000 pictures between them in a bid to win a share of the £6,500 prize fund.

All the winning pictures are included in the exhibition.
