Probe as crash victim is left lying in ditch

The police watchdog is investigating after a seriously injured man from Leeds was found lying in a ditch more than two hours after a driver reported a collision.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said it is assessing Gloucestershire Constabulary’s response after a driver called police saying she may have hit someone.

The woman was driving near Cheltenham racecourse on March 16 – during the Cheltenham Festival – and phoned police to say her car had been hit by a bottle or a person. Officers searched the area but initially could not find anything.

The 52-year-old Leeds man’s injuries included nine broken ribs, a punctured lung and three broken vertebrae.
