Probe into house fire that closed road

FIREFIGHTERS in Sheffield are investigating the cause of a house fire that closed Barnsley Road in Fir Vale on Wednesday afternoon.

Crews from Elm Lane, Darnall and Central fire stations were called to the blaze at about 12.40pm that day.

An aerial ladder platform was used to fight the fire, which had broken out in the roof space of the house. Nobody was inside the property at the time.

Station manager Trevor Bernard said: "The firefighters did a tremendous job ensuring that the blaze was confined to just one property. The fire was in the roof space of the house and could easily have spread to adjoining homes.

"There was considerable damage inside the house due to the heat and smoke, and also the water used to extinguish the blaze."

Meanwhile, firefighters have completed damping down a huge tyre fire in Mexborough, which broke out in the early hours of Monday in White Lea Grove. Residents who were evacuated from their homes are now returning home.

Doncaster Council's assistant director of neighbourhoods and communities, Gill Gillies, said neighbourhood teams would continue to provide dedicated support.
