Project to reduce leaking pipes

Motorists in Birkenshaw are being warned to expect delays as Yorkshire Water carries out work to reduce leaks on its underground water pipe network.

Today work is due to start replacing around 1,000 metres of cast iron piping, dating back to 1930.

The work will start on Bradford Road, Birkenshaw, and will progress from Moorlands Road to Allen Croft over a 12 week period.

Traffic lights will be in place during the works which are part of a £2.5m project by the company to replace almost 13 kilometres of underground cast-iron pipe in more than a dozen areas of Bradford and Keighley.

The project aims to significantly reduce the average age of the company’s water supply network, but it will also increase the robustness of its underground pipes, ensuring fewer bursts and disruptions to water supplies.

Charlie Haysom, director of asset delivery, said: “A project of this size is always likely to cause some disruption, but we want to reassure local residents that we’ll be doing everything we can to minimise disruption and complete the work as quickly as possible.”
