Promising rower storms to nine A*s

WITH nine A* grades and a promising rowing career ahead, the future for 16-year-old Adam Janes is looking like smooth sailing.

Adam, a student at St Peter's School in York, achieved nine A* grades and one A grade in his GCSEs, just a few weeks after being selected for England in the Under-18 eight rowing team.

And while his contemporaries were out celebrating their results, Adam spent the afternoon on the River Ouse, teaching youngsters how to row.

The student took the top grade in English language, maths, religious studies, science, additional science, history, geography and Spanish and an A grade in English literature.

He will now go on to continue with his studies at St Peter's and is looking to go on to study law at university.

Adam first began rowing just three years ago and now has his sights on international competition.

As well as studying for A-levels in maths, further maths, economics, politics and physics from next month, he will also be hoping to make the Great Britain team for the World Rowing Junior Championships in 2011 and will take part in a series of trials around the country in his bid to be selected.

"My focus at the moment is on going to university and getting a good degree," he said. "I will see where the rowing takes me as well.

St Peter's headteacher Leo Winkley said: "This is another very impressive performance given he has had a very committed rowing year on top of his GCSEs."
