Prosthetic centre stages open day

Steeper Clinic, a treatment centre for plagiocephaly and other head shape abnormalities in infants, is holding an open day on Tuesday May 17 at its premises in Leeds.

That day, the company’s team of experts will be on hand to discuss the different conditions and treatment options, answer questions and provide preliminary scans.

Deformational plagiocephaly, sometimes known as “flat head syndrome”, is said to be a common condition in which external forces cause a baby’s head to take on an abnormal shape.

It is characterised by flattening of one side of the back of the head and can be noticeable from birth, or becomes apparent in the first few months of life.

A company spokeswoman said: “At the moment, the NHS does not fund treatment for plagiocephaly as it is seen as a purely cosmetic issue.”

The company, the UK’s largest provider of orthotic and prosthetic clinical services, also makes prosthetic products at its premises at Unit 6 on the Hunslet Trading Estate in Leeds and exports those products to healthcare services in the United States.
