Protest in city over war criminals

HUNDREDS of people from the Bangladeshi community in Yorkshire are to gather in Bradford this Sunday in a mass “show of strength” which is aimed at bringing alleged war criminals to justice.

They will gather in Centenary Square as they step up their fight to raise awareness of alleged atrocities committed during the Bangladesh War of Independence 42 years ago.

The event is the first organised by the Bradford-based Spirit of 71 pressure group, named after the war which resulted in the torture and murder of activists.

Momentum is growing in Bangladesh to extradite the perpetrators – some of whom are believed to be living in the UK – to face charges of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Spirit of 71 members are mounting their own campaign in a bid to generate greater understanding of the plight suffered by so many people and to seek justice three decades later on their behalf.

Members of Spirit of 71 will also protest against recent rise of neo-Taliban fundamentalists in Bangladesh and will condemn the recent atrocities committed by religious fanatics against ethnic minorities.
