Protest staged over 'unbearable' smell from compost factory

PROTESTERS who claim their lives are being ruined by the smell from a compost factory staged a meeting outside the plant yesterday.

People from the villages of Misson and Newington, on the border between South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, have been waging their battle for years.

They said yesterday the smell from the Tunnel Tech premises was still "unbearable".

The factory is in Newington, near Bawtry, and Worksop-based Bassetlaw Council has ordered company chiefs to take action.

But protesters say the company has repeatedly missed deadlines set by the council and also claim the authority has refused to take legal action to force the company to comply.

Kath Williamson, who lives in Misson, said: "It has been a problem for 10 years and the factory has got bigger and the smell worse. We don't want it to close, we just want the smell stopped. The technology is available to stop the disgusting smell – the council should just force the firm to buy it."

Tunnel Tech general manager Simon Middlebrook said: "The company has invested significantly in facilities to reduce the odour from the process and has committed to continue to work to resolve the issue. The company continues to have constructive dialogue with the relevant authorities."
