Protest as York’s Lendal bridge closed to traffic

Campaigners opposed to the temporary closure of York’s Lendal Bridge to traffic are planning to stage a protest this morning.

A petition on social media site Facebook has been signed by over 2,000 people against the six-month trial which will see cars and motorbikes banned from using the route during working hours.

Protesters, who are concerned the move will cause gridlock, are planning to make their views known
by staging a protest on the bridge this morning as the trial get underway.

The petition warns plans to improve the look of the city for tourists “should not come at the expense of its residents”.

Another comment on the site says: “Cutting pollution is great, but if people are lazy they will drive another route. Traffic in, out and around York is terrible from 3pm-6pm. Shutting the bridge will only increase the volume on other roads.”

Councillors have said the move will cut congestion and make life easier for pedestrians. They also argue it will improve the punctuality of public transport.

Access to Lendal Bridge for cars, lorries and motorbikes will be restricted between 10.30am to 5pm, seven days a week. Buses, cyclists, pedestrians, taxis and emergency vehicles will continue to have full access.
