PROTESTeRS gathered in Leeds yesterday to voice their anger that Tetley’s cask beer will no longer be brewed in Yorkshire.

City MP Greg Mulholland, members of the Leeds branch of the Campaign for Real Ale and other campaigners delivered a letter of protest to Tetley’s Brewery, in Brewery Wharf in the city, to reiterate their outrage at the announcement earlier this week. Mr Mulholland, the Liberal Democrat MP for Leeds North West, who has put down an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons condemning the decision to move production of the beer out of the city, claimed it “unnecessarily brings to end more than 180 years of history”.

Earlier this week, Tetley’s parent company, Carlsberg UK, announced that Tetley’s Cask Ale will move to Wolverhampton under a contract with brewer Marston’s.

Under a separate contract, Tetley’s Smoothflow will be brewed at Molson Coors brewery in Tadcaster.

Andy Hume, the brewery director at Leeds Brewery, said the company had looked at “all realistic options” in Yorkshire to brew Tetley’s cask, but he maintained there was not the suitable capacity available.
