£100,000 charity skydive success for Hague’s father, 83

THE 83-year-old father of Foreign Secretary William Hague is celebrating raising more than £100,000 for the NSPCC after completing a charity skydive at the weekend.

Nigel Hague, from Greasbrough on the outskirts of Rotherham, completed the 10,000ft tandem parachute jump at the Skydiving Centre in Grindale, near Bridlington.

His daredevil exploits on Saturday raised £52,000 for the children’s charity and follow on from another fundraising challenge which he undertook two years ago.

Mr Hague, whose son is the MP for Richmond in North Yorkshire, scaled the 3,209ft Scafell Pike in the Lake District in seven-and-a-half hours in 2009, and raised more than £51,000 for the NSPCC. He is planning to undertake more fundraising in the future, but has yet to decide on his next challenge.

Mr Hague added: “I really enjoyed the challenge of the sky dive, it was thrilling. I was fortunate that the weather held out and was glad to reach terra firma in one piece.

“I have supported the NSPCC for a number of years and I am thrilled to have raised over £50,000 (with the skydive).”

The NSPCC’s community fundraising manager for the East Riding, Claire Reading, paid tribute to Mr Hague’s efforts, which she claimed have been “truly remarkable”.

Since it was established in London in 1884, the NSPCC has helped more than 10 million children throughout the UK.
