£100,000 flood protection boost for residents

Pickering residents look set to benefit from a £100,000 project to protect their homes from flooding.

The scheme will provide flood barriers for up to 29 properties in the town.

Work has already started, with surveys being carried out on flood- hit properties.

In addition to the flood barriers on individual properties, work including non-return valves for drainage pipes and repointing work will be carried out on homes in a bid to boost defences.

The scheme is being funded by Ryedale District Council, the Environment Agency and the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee’s Local Levy fund.

Chairman of the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, Councillor Arthur Barker said: “The committee is delighted to be able to support this project in Pickering.

“It is essential that people are prepared to deal with floods when they happen and property level protection can be incredibly successful.

“Hopefully this funding will go some way to reducing the misery that flooding can cause in Pickering.”
