£150,000 boost for Scunthorpe market

MARY Portas’s call for the revitalisation of Britain’s markets has been heeded in Scunthorpe with the announcement of £150,000 of investment in the town centre.

The retail troubleshooter said entrepreneurial traders could help turn around ailing high streets, and North Lincolnshire Council aims to find out by funding a major upgrade of Scunthorpe Market in a bid to encourage a new generation of stallholders to enter business.

Redundant outdoor stalls have been demolished and work is beginning to improve the rear of the Old Market Hall and install new lighting, fencing, drainage and footpaths.

A new 90-berth car park is also being built that will feature an hour’s free parking in a bid to attract more shoppers to the area.

Coun John Briggs, cabinet member for asset management, culture and housing, said: “We’ve listened to our stallholders at Scunthorpe Market and we’re delivering free parking on their doorstep.

“Renting a market stall is a great way to try out a new business idea with low start-up costs.

“You can enjoy being your own boss with rents starting from as little as £9.14 at Ashby Market.”
