A new theatre for eye surgery has opened at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

The 150,000 facility will be used mainly for ophthalmology cases such as cataract and eyelid surgery where only a local anaesthetic is needed.

Previously patients undergoing minor eye surgery were treated in the day surgery unit.

The theatre will also be used for minor plastic surgery cases and for the treatment of kidney stones.

Consultant in ophthalmology Colin Hutchinson said: “This new theatre will be of huge benefit to patients who require eye surgery. A large number of our patients will be treated in this facility in addition to continuing lists in the day surgery unit and at Calderdale Royal Hospital.

“As well as the additional capacity this will give our service, it also means theatre space will be freed up in day surgery.”
