£1m project to ensure water supply

Work has begun on a £1m project to improve the security of water supplies to 9,000 properties in and around Beverley.

Contractors Morrison Utility Services are laying around four miles of water mains between Yorkshire Water's water treatment works on Keldgate Road and the company's service reservoir off Walkington Road in Beverley.

The work – which is getting underway in the fields just north of the treatment works – adds a second major main to supply water to the town.

The company, which supplies 1.24 billion litres of drinking water every day, equivalent to just under 50,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools, is using high-technology tunnelling technology to run the pipe under the A164 and the A1079, and there will be no need for restrictions to be imposed on traffic.

Project manager Tom Keighley said they recognised relying on a single water pipe could jeopardise supplies in future. He added: "Ensuring we maintain water supplies to our customers at all times is extremely important to us and this brand new pipe will help us to do just that and give us extra flexibility when it comes to supplying our customers in Beverley."
