£5,000 boost for theatre facilities

THEATREgoers are to benefit from a £5,000 investment to rid a seaside venue of its old stage and allow it to host a greater range of entertainment.

Scarborough Council has invested the cash on a more flexible staging area for the Northern Lights Suite at Whitby Pavilion, which has been used for family shows, a band concert and this week’s folk festival.

Whitby Folk Week director Barry Evans said: “The new stage is certainly a big improvement to the old rickety stage previously in place and looks much more professional. The stage is also much more secure and comforting under foot.”

The stage is made up of sections so it can configured for a variety of backdrops, and be in different places in the room.

Janet Deacon, Scarborough Council’s tourism manager, said: “The flexibility of the new stage means we can easily cater for a diverse range of events and acts who want to perform in Whitby.”
