£50m marina plan for resort takes big step forward

PLANS for a 50m marina in Bridlington have moved a step closer after a preferred layout was agreed by the three main partners behind the project.

East Riding Council, the Harbour Commissioners and Yorkshire Forward have agreed an outline for a scheme that would see the creation of 320 marina berths ranging from six metres to 15 metres, also allowing for some larger visiting and commercial berths, and 74 commercial berths of the same dimensions.

Work is now beginning on a master plan to cover design issues, while a business plan is also being drawn up.

The council said all three groups were determined to pursue the scheme despite potential funding sources being restricted by difficulties in the economy.

“Whilst these are still difficult times for public funding, the marina has been a long-term plan for the partners and the commitment to delivery remains.”

Council leader, Coun Stephen Parnaby, said: “We have now reached the stage where the harbour and marina lay-out can accommodate the existing Trust Port requirements whilst providing for all the predicted expansion in the marina and the development needed to support the town centre.

“The proposals represent a significant step forward for the marina project and for the future of Bridlington.”

The agreement follows hydrodynamic tests in and around the harbour to examine wave conditions, the movement of sediment and beach erosion.

The results showed “much improved” conditions in the harbour and no significant effect on the beaches, the council said.

George Traves, chairman of Bridlington Harbour Commissioners, said: “The most recent work has shown that, subject to some land issues, an improved harbour can be developed alongside the marina proposals. I look forward to the completed development.”
