£60M boost for wind power hopes

The Government has announced up to £60m in funding to help develop port sites to attract wind turbine manufacturers to the UK.

It will launch a competition to choose locations which could support thousands of jobs in the wind energy sector and its supply chain.

The announcement came after the Yorkshire Post revealed that business leaders had been lobbying multinationals to site their manufacturing operations near the Humber.

The Humber ports are closest to a large offshore wind farm planned for the North Sea.

The Budget document said: "The Government is acting to ensure the UK benefits from the rapid manufacturing and supply chain expansion needed to meet the increased deployment of offshore wind."

Yorkshire Forward said it would worki to make sure that the Humber benefits from the announcement.

Able UK and Associated British Ports, which are both promoting land they own around the Humber to wind turbine manufacturers, welcomed the news.
