£6m street light plan for York

York Council has a responsibility for maintaining over 18,000 street lamps including 5,685 concrete columns across the city.

In 2012 more than 1,100 concrete and steel street lights were replaced and the authority now hopes to replace 4,585 concrete columns and install LED head units. Many lights are at the end of their natural life.

Members of the council’s cabinet are being asked to back plans for a £4.7m bid for Government cash and pledge £1.2m towards the project. If the plans are backed it is estimated the move could save around £100,000 a year.

Coun David Levene, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said yesterday: “Investing in LED lighting is cheaper, better for the environment and gives a superior quality of illumination.”
