£750m campus design wins planning award

THE DESIGNS for the £750m Heslington East campus development at York University have won a Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) award.

The RTPI Yorkshire Planning Award 2010 rewards outstanding achievement in planning and the university plans have now been shortlisted for RTPI's national award which will be announced in February.

It was prepared with input from York University, the architects BDP, planning consultants O'Neill Associates, and road and traffic consultants Aecom.

It outlines the university's long-term vision for the design of Heslington East, creating architectural consistency in the development of the new campus.

The 65-hectare campus extension, which is based on a combination of public and private funding, including support from the European Regional Development Fund, will eventually result in an increase in student numbers to 15,400 as well as employing up to 2,000 people. It is making a massive social, economic, educational and cultural contribution.

The Yorkshire Planning Award was presented at Leeds Metropolitan University attended by the York University's pro vice chancellor for estates and strategic projects Elizabeth Heaps, Janet O'Neill, director of O'Neill associates and BDP's architect director Stephen Hill.

Ms Heaps said: "Heslington East is one of the biggest capital developments in UK higher education in the last decade. As a world class university it is vital that our space and facilities are of the highest standard and we are particularly pleased to receive an award which recognises the quality of the planning and design of the new campus extension."
