£8m gift aids research into disease

A donation of £8m – the largest Sheffield University has received since it was founded in 1905 – has been put towards a new £12m state-of-the-art motor neurone disease (MND) research institute in the city.

The money came from the Sheffield Institute Foundation for Motor Neurone Disease (SIFMND), formed by a group of patrons who wanted to support the development of the institute.

Chairman of SIFMND, Stephen Sly, who is also managing partner of law firm DLA Piper, said: "We have been very fortunate to have a group of patrons and supporters dedicated to raising funds. Their enthusiasm and passion has been outstanding."
