Pub cooks wonderful tonight for guitar god

Guitar legend Eric Clapton set to work planning his daughter's wedding while tucking into fish and chips and treacle sponge and custard at a quiet village pub in South Yorkshire.

The millionaire star – nicknamed Slowhand and at one time God for his supernatural guitar prowess – travelled north with his model wife Melia McEnery for a celebratory get together with daughter Ruth and her husband-to-be Dean Bartlett at the Mayflower Bar at Austerfield near Doncaster.

Most of the locals didn't recognise Eric – who fathered Ruth while he was married to George Harrison's ex Pattie Boyd in 1985 – but pub owner Rob Hudson wasn't too surprised when he walked through the door.

Rob, 42, said yesterday: "Ruth doesn't live that far away, and she comes in to eat with Dean quite a lot so I wasn't that surprised to see Eric at the bar.

"They came along to celebrate Ruth's birthday and talk about the wedding. But I'm not sure that anyone else in the place recognised Eric.

"It's not as if he acts like a superstar. He just seemed to me to be a very humble guy, who looks trendy and cool… more like a writer or a thespian than anything else."

Eric's haddock and chips set him back just 8.95. The treacle pud cost an extra 4.50.

Rob added: "I don't know if he gets fish and chips and treacle sponge much in America, but I think he enjoyed the meal, and we were really pleased to see him at the Mayflower."
