Pub grub to feature more local produce

A YOUNG couple are trying to bring quality dining using local produce to a Wolds pub.

Sharon Coutts, 26, who appeared in the first series of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey's hit television show The F-Word, and her partner James Robbins, 25, have officially re-opened the Falling Stone in Thwing.

With almost a decade of experience in the hospitality trade, head chef Miss Coutts, who has previously run venues in York, Ilkley and Whitby, is keen to see the pub, which features in this year's Michelin Guide, go from strength to strength.

"A village needs a pub and it's important that we support the village as much as they support us.

"We hope to bring the locals back in and give them exactly what they want – good food and good beer," said Miss Coutts, who is originally from Driffield.

"It's taken everything we have got so I'm hoping it will do exactly what we are hoping it will do," added Mr Robbins.

To make sure their menu, which changes every month, features the freshest ingredients, the couple plan to hand rear quail and fowl on land to the rear of the pub, as well as growing herbs to be added to the a la carte dishes.

For example, yesterday's menu featured fillet steak with caramelised shallot and red wine gravy and trio of lamb chops with balsamic vinegar, garlic and chili jus.

Miss Coutts, who came second in a Delicious Yorkshire contest, said: "We use the local butchers and the local fishmonger who goes to Scarborough fish market every morning, and use the local creamery for eggs and milk."

Mr Robbins will be responsible for the front of house where diners and pub-goers alike can enjoy a selection of local cask ales.

The pub also doubles up as a gallery, showcasing art and photographs created by local artists, with Mr Robbins adding: "Everything that adorns the walls is for sale, " including the numerous orchids which decorate the window ledges.

The building, formerly the Rampant Horse pub, was renamed as a meteorite apparently fell nearby many years ago.
