Pub review: The White Hart, Wadworth

This is a place of two halves. Walking through the front door, you can turn right into what is essentially a games and sports bar, with a pool table and darts board and a wide-screen TV. Turn to your right, and you are in a drinking and restaurant area, which is more traditional. It’s warm, friendly, with one or two nooks and corners, and an imaginative use of space.

Here we have very much a community pub, with quiz nights and a wide support of local charities and events. The wine list may be short and pretty conventional, but the food is something special and, it is said, the Sunday lunches are highly popular and well-priced. Chef’s specials run across a wide range of offers, and seem to fit most pockets. They also have a budget menu for those of senior years, who can also claim their pension here as the pub has taken on the mantle of the village post office!

Mention real ales to the barman, and you are likely to get a discussion on the merits of the Golden Hen – which, indeed, is something special.

There’s seating outside for warmer times. The new signage is welcoming, and the fresh lick of paint makes the place all the more inviting. Car parking is ample.

In essence, then, The Hart has a very big warm heart indeed – and places where you can buy a few stamps and then enjoy a good pint are pretty few on the ground. More’s the pity.
