Pub rweview: The Spread Eagle, Penistone, Sheffield

There are probably more trendy places in this little corner of Yorkshire, but the Spread Eagle is an engaging little inn, which has served many a pint to those tackling the Pennine Way.

It has recently been given a a bit of a make-over – in that there’s quite a lot of new upholstery and some fresh carpeting and paintwork. The character has been retained – a lovely little snug to the front, with a dartboard and a pool room off that, served by a hatchway.

There are changing real ales (Bradfield Blonde is popular but Sharp’s Doombar was giving the landlady effervescent grief) and, considering the limited serving area space, a good selection of wines and spirits.

Once, there was a cattle market outside the front door. Today, it is far more likely that the view will be walkers or lycra-clad cyclists whizzing past.

There’s a compact beer garden to the rear, with wooden picnic-style tables. It isn’t posh, it isn’t fancy, but that is clearly what endears “The Spread” to its regulars, of which there were several, enjoying a leisurely drink.

In troubled times for pubs, the Eagle seems to be holding on, and clawing back its own segment of the local trade. Not a pub for fine dining – there doesn’t seem to be any space for a kitchen sadly, but there is an excellent chippie right across the street – but one where you can cheer on your team, and have a darned good natter in the corner, with a modestly-priced drink. Would that there were more of its kind.
