Pub of the week: Cap and Collar, Saltaire

It’s tiny, seating around 35 people plus a yard at the back for another dozen folk. It’s had previous lives, most recently as a sweet shop. Owner Phil Garvey has done it out nicely, with bookcase wallpaper at one end of the open-plan room, pretend red brick at the other. In-between, a concrete floor and simple metal tables and chairs.

Local brews feature; four handpulls might include Saltaire Brewery’s Citra Pale Ale, Wishbone Blonde and Collarbone and from further afield, Kent’s Cavedweller. Another two are available (including Punk IPA) from kegs which are visible behind glass at the back of the bar and there’s an impressive selection of bottles and cans from around the world; I like the sound of Delirium Tremens from Belgium and Little Fluffy Clouds by Wylam in Northumberland.

Cawston Press, Fentimans and Fever Tree provide the soft drinks and there are a token half a dozen wines. Locally made pork pies are on offer. From time to time Phil runs a cheese-tasting night.
