Public asked to share memories of Jubilee

People in Craven are being asked to help create an online archive to help future generations look back at how the area marked the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

There were a number of events in the district including a street party in Skipton High Street which was attended by many who turned out in red, white and blue and got into the spirit of the day despite the heavy rainfall.

In a bid to ensure the memories of the Diamond Jubilee are recorded staff at Skipton Library are now creating an online archive.

Library staff are now asking people to share their memories of how Craven celebrated the Diamond Jubilee so that future generations can see how the historic event was commemorated locally.

They are asking for memorabilia including photographs, programmes or stories that could be added to a digital archive.

Photographs collected by Skipton library in the run-up to the Diamond Jubilee which show how Craven celebrated the Coronation and Silver Jubilee, are available to view online via Skipton Library’s HistoryPin website: www.historypin.com.

The collection already includes some colour photographs of Skipton in 1977.

The pictures came to light in Skipton Civic Society’s archive.

County councillor Chris Metcalfe, North Yorkshire’s executive member for library and information centres, said: “North Yorkshire’s libraries have a key role in collecting and preserving the history of their local area and the Diamond Jubilee is an ideal opportunity for libraries to work with local communities to celebrate this historic event.”

Anyone who took photographs of last week’s celebrations and are happy for them to be shared online is urged to contact John Frankland, by calling 0845 034 9538 or they can email: [email protected]
