Public gets chance to see plans for football club's stadium

PLANS for Rotherham United's new stadium go on display to the public today after being unveiled by the club's chairman Tony Stewart at a preview.

The multi-million pound scheme will see the site of the former Guest and Chrimes foundry in Rotherham town centre transformed into a 12,000 capacity venue.

Blueprints show the stadium alongside the River Don close to Centenary Way, with new vehicle access from Don Street, new car parking and pedestrian links to the bus and rail stations.

Rotherham United are playing home matches at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield after problems surfaced with the owners of their old ground Millmoor.

Mr Stewart, who took the club on at around the time the team was forced to move, said: "When I look back two years ago we were facing serious adversity as a club and a town.

"But it is now time to move on and we have these ambitious plans for moving the club forward. Rotherham people and Rotherham United have a lot to look forward to."

It is hoped an outline planning application for the stadium will be submitted by the end of May.

The authority's director of development Karl Battersby said the site, which is owned by Leeds property firm Evans, would be bought by the council and leased to the club.

He said it was not possible to reveal the purchase price.
