Public given view of flood work plan

PEOPLE in Cottingham are being invited to a public exhibition showing plans for a major flood alleviation project aimed at protecting the village.

The "Raywell Flood Attenuation Scheme" would see a series of terraced lagoons built on land off Eppleworth and Westfield Road to the north of Castle Hill Hospital.

Capable of holding four million gallons of water, the lagoons could save Cottingham from a repeat of the damage suffered in the 2007 floods, when hundreds of residents were forced to move out of their homes by water that ran into the village off agricultural land.

Coun Jonathan Owen, deputy leader of East Riding Council and a member of the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence Committee, said: "The scheme, which is funded by the council and the Yorkshire Regional Flood Defence committee, is the largest scheme of this type ever undertaken by East Riding of Yorkshire Council."

The plans go on show at Cottingham Civic Hall, on Tuesday, February 15, from 11am to 8.30pm. Engineers will be on hand to answer questions and a working model of the lagoon system should be on display.

Subject to planning permission work could start later this year.
